If you have kids in your home, chances are you have a box or two (or more!) of cereal in your pantry. After all, cereal is easy to prepare, relatively expensive and pretty darn tasty.

But if you’re trying to cut back on sugar, many kid-favorite cereals can quickly derail your efforts. (I’m looking at you, Cocoa Krispies – sorry!).

However, if you choose wisely, cereal can be a great way to fuel your kids, while still keeping their sugar in-check.

First…Try These Smart Cereal Tricks!

Before you go all-out and make a huge cereal swap in your home, set yourself up for success with these two simple tricks.

  1. Go Slow: If your kiddo is hooked on a cereal with loads of sugar, he or she will be an angry little monster if you suddenly replace it with one that has none. Start off by mixing your child’s favorite cereal with the better pick, then gradually switch the ratios so that there is less and less of the sugary one, and more and more of the healthful pick.
  2. Add Fun: Some of my favorite low-sugar cereals are, unfortunately, also low in flavor and fun. Amp things up by topping cereal with flavorful berries, nuts and a sprinkle of chia, flax or hemp hearts.

The 20 Best Breakfast Cereals for Kids

I scoured the nutrition labels of over a hundred cereal brands and whittled it down to the following twenty, all of which have 6 grams or less of total sugar, and have been kid-approved by my two opinionated tykes.
