Now that the weather is finally warming up, this Strawberry Orange Smoothie has been in high-demand in my home. It’s sweet, refreshing, filling and super simple to make.
When it comes to recipes, you know that I always like to add just one ingredient to make it a little healthier. Well, the special, powerhouse ingredient in this Strawberry Orange smoothie is…tofu!
Tofu in a Smoothie?! That Sounds Strange
I know, I know, if you’ve never had tofu in a smoothie, it sounds bizarre. But, trust me, it makes the smoothie super creamy without needing any yogurt or milk. Don’t get me wrong, I like dairy foods, but I also like mixing things up a bit now and then. Plus, tofu has such a neutral flavor, you won’t even know it’s there (except for the creaminess, of course).
The key to the velvety texture is to use silken tofu, which makes smoothies much softer and smoother than what extra firm tofu would do.
Why is Tofu a Smart Ingredient?
Tofu is packed with protein and fiber, making it a smart ingredient to add to your kid’s breakfast smoothies. Protein and fiber are more slowly digested by our bodies and tend to help us to feel full longer. This is obviously a very good quality for a meal to have before you send her off to school for the day.
Another potential benefit? Research suggests that girls who eat soy-based foods, like tofu, may have a reduced risk of breast cancer later on in life.
